San Diego, USA (July 3).- The Aussie Stingers (including Sharks Nicola Zagame) succumbed to the United States of America in the gold-medal final of the women's water polo FINA World League Super Finals in La Jolla today. The game went to a penalty shootout after it was locked at 7-7 after regulation time and the USA sent in all five shots to Australia's four. For the defending champion it was its fifth crown in seven years while Australia added second silver to its three bronzes in the same period. Nicola also just competed in Australia U20 titles representing NSW. NSW won the title with Nicola highest goal scorer and MVP. Well done Nic.

National League Team finishes 4th

Cronulla Sharks Womens National League Team

After finishing the normal season in 5th Place the girls were faced with a tough draw to the final. Who would have dreamed that they’d draw 10-10 with Barracuda’s on Tuesday Morning and then back up a few hours later to defeat a fresh KFC Breakers 11-9. They then went on to win their group.

They lost the Semi to Barracuda’s on Thursday so had to playoff on Saturday for Bronze against Fremantle. After a slow start our girls hit their straps but the clock beat them and they went down 11–9 to finish the season in 4th position. Nicola Zagame was named in the 2010 All-stars Team, and also along with Patrice O’Neal in the Stingers Squad.

Congratulations to Alicia McCormack, Bob Bryant and the Players for a fantastic season.

Sports Luncheon a hugh sucess
On the 16th April Cronulla Sharks Water Polo Club held their annual Sports Luncheon at the Georges River Sailing Club. It was a very successful afternoon raising funds for the Club and the Violet Foundation. Jon Harker was the MC and interviewed many special guests throughout the afternoon including Emma (Winter Olympian) and Holly (Australian Water Polo rep) Lincoln-Smith, Mieke Cabout (Sharks import and Olympic gold medallist), Greg McFadden (Olympian and Australian Women’s Coach), Brendan Gan (Sydney FC midfielder) and John Coates (AOC President). The crowd was also treated to a very entertaining segment with the Gold Gold Australia Gold, Norman May. Congratulations to Janine Kerr for a very well organised event and thank you to Kemp Strang for their continued corporate support. Make sure you don't miss this wonderful event next year.

It was fantastic to see the girls come together and play some great polo as a team over the weekend in Wagga Wagga for the State U16 Championships.

To be knocked out in golden goal coming back from 5 - 2 deficit against SNB in the Final showed a lot of character and desire to do well for each other that was one of the best team efforts I have been involved in until we backed up against a team of swimmers (Hunter) and beat them at their own game. The win to come third meant so much and I hope you all take the time to realise what you have achieved.

Well done and thank you for a great weekend - Peter Schmid

Ziggy ready to pull the trigger

Nicola Zagame sealed the victory in a closely contested bronze medal match against Sydney Northern Beaches with a goal in the last 10 seconds. The Sharks had not lead in the match until then. After being down 3-0 after 3 mins Ziggy showed great leadership and rallied the troops to claw back the deficeit. Maddy Schmid scored just before the end of the first quarter to start closing the gap. With 6 players from the U16's, the Sharks were the youngest team in the semi-finals, but what they lacked in experience they made up for in tenacity. After winning their group pool they met a very experienced Sydney Uni in the semi-final.

Even though they matched Uni 3-3 in the second half they had given them too much start in the first half eventually going down 9-6. Not to be too disappointed the team managed to pick up their spirits with the help of Ziggy and the experience of their coach, Bruce Falson to hang in there in a very tense bronze match and salvage a win. Bruce said the team "performed quite OK considering they had not trained as a team before the tournament due to the players other water polo commitments".

The Cronulla mens team also faired well by just missing out on the semi- finals and beating Hunter 11-6 for 5th.

Masters Games

In October Cronulla had a few teams competing in the Masters Games. The Men’s Water Polo teams managed to collect Gold and Silver and the Women, not to be out shone had a clean sweep of Gold. This was a great opportunity to show all the young kids of the club that not only were theses Sharks good in their day but they still have it. Congrats to Di Watkins for also winning gold in Hockey.

U18's State Club Titles

Last weekend the Cronulla U18s Boys and Girls teams played in the NSW State Titles. The Boys came in 5th and the Girls team came in a very commendable 2nd. After making the Semi-finals on a goal difference count back they then survived an extra time golden goal in the semi final only to go down 7-5 to Drummoyne in the final. Congratulations girls for a very gallant effort. Congratulations also to Mieke for coaching these young girls who appreciate your time and experience. Thankyou also to Pietro for looking after the girl’s team on the Friday. Five Girls and two Boys were chosen in the U18 State Squad.

Players are free to pick and choose how many sessions and what combination of sessions they would like to access each week. We strongly urge all players to trial this idea and find the best program to suit your own needs. This is not to replace ITC squads.

Craig Stevens will be running the swim sessions, and the ball skills will be run by High level players and coaches.
